Kimo: We have all been furry aware of the bad pet food out there recently, but do you know there is some other foods in yer very own house that can be harmful to you too?

Sabi: We learned about this stuff from Dr. Jon at PetPlace.com. Here is a brief list, and we'll give you the linky to da full article at da end;

Alcoholic Beverages:
There's ethanol in that stuff - will kill ya - duh!

Apples, Apricots, Cheries, Peaches & Plums:
They contain cyanide in da stems, seeds and leaves!

Avocados:
Toxic component is "persin." Can cause breathing and heart problems to us.

Baking Powder or Baking Soda:
Can lead to electrolite abnormalities, congestive heart failure or muscle spasms.

Chocolate:
You'll get runny poop, increased pee, restlessness and possibly seizures!

Coffee (grounds & beans):
You can get caffeine toxicity.

Fatty foods (like left overs or stuff from da trash):
These can cause pancreatitis, lots of upchucking and runny poop!

Dairy Products:
We lack the enzyme required to digest lactose - more runny poop!

Grapes & Raisins:
Possible kidney failure!

Macadamia Nuts:
Can cause weakness, depression, vomiting, difficulty walking, tremors, abdominal pain, lameness, stiffness - wowy!

Moldy or Spoiled Food (usually from trash):

More tremors, seizures, nervous system abnormalities or death.

Thanks for sharing that list of dangerous foods. My humans knew about chocolate and dairy products, although they still let me lick the bottom of their cereal bowls or vanilla ice cream bowls. I haven't been affected by that little bit of milk.

That was really, really interesting, thanks! Like Dragonheart, Mom knew about some of them, but I also still get a little bit of yogurt every so often, and haven't had any problem.

Thanks for sharing this important info! Sometimes a little yogurt is good for you, especially those with probiotics. My VET said that its good to have a little if you're on antibiotics.

Thank you for the information, the younger beans are always trying to feed something to the cats. I will put a stop to this today, don't want sick cats, we love them too much.

Those are very good tips. With the recent food scare our Mother is thinking of making our food now. We aren't sure about that. We have seen her cook before and usually the smoke alarm goes off.

I get yogurt for a treat because it doesn't upset kitty tummies. Just be sure if your humans give you some that it is plain with no sugar, fake sugar and stuff in it. I like Brown Cow plain the very best.

Excellent, informative post, Kimo & Sabi. And don't forget house plants - lots of those are dangerous for kitties. One of the worst is Easter lilies and that time of year is coming up. Even a few bites on a leaf or a lick of pollen can cause kidney failure!

This is a really good post! Thanks for posting this! We all need to make sure we're not giving our kitties bad food - but especially that our kitties can't get to the bad food when we're out of the house! We don't want them to get sick! :(

I guess it is a good thing that we only eat kibble afterall. Tracy was always telling us that people food isn't very good for kitties.
