Kimo Update

We are missing Kimo while he's at the vet's through the weekend. He has to have the catheter in until sometime Monday. He has to wear a cone collar so he doesn't pull the catheter out. We will find out Monday when he can come home.

You can read more about Feline Urinary Blockage HERE. There are tons of articles on the internet, but this was a simple, short one so you could get the jist of the condition.

Thanks for all the suggestions, advice, and prayers. We'll keep you posted.

I am glad he is doing well! The initial hours are always the most critical. Purrs to Kimo.

We just heard about poor Kimo! We are sending lots of purrs and healing vibes his way.

One of our ones-who-came-before, Shellshock, had blockages and had to be catheterized. My mom doesn't remember the type of crystals he had, but he was on acidifying meds for the rest of his life. He lived to be 21!

We will keep purring for Kimo to get all better and never have to deal with this again ... ever!

I just heard about Kimo. My initial reaction was OUCH!!! I hope that he continues to do well and that a special diet can prevent this from ever happening again.

Oh man, poor Kimo! I'm glad they got it early, but it sucks to have to have the catheter. That can't be comfortable. In fact, my nether regions just clenched in sympathy for him...

Oh Kimo bro' I feel your pain. I am prone to this problem. Not every mancat who gets blocked gets repeatedly blocked, sometimes it's a once off. So don't lose heart. I make Struvite crystals.

I am on special fuuds forever, but just recently I got blocked again, by a rogue crystal in my urethra (probably formed in old scar tissue) The fuuds are ok. I also get a Cystaid capsule sprinkled onto my fuuds daily to help make sure my bladder makes enough mucous - Cystaid contains a type of special glucosamine which tells the bladder to keep making the mucous. I get an extra 30mls of water in my fuud at each meal too - just to make sure I keep peeing and flush those potential crystals out, out, out! I have made the apes keep four big water bowls out through the house too, so that I have plenty of oppotunity to drink.

I get a urine cyrstal analysis done about every six months to check that I'm not making more crystals or that the apes have over controlled the crystals and made the type of crystals change from Struvite to Oxylate, which can happen occasionally. Oxylate crystals need a different fuud to Struvite crystals to dissolve them. Both types of fuuds come in wet and dry forms and there are lots of different makes so a bit of variety in taste can be had so I don't get bored.

I have been blocked twice, and each time the blockage could be attributed to a stressful event. Sometimes it can be a bacterial infection that causes the crystals or mucous plugs to form too. After each blockage was cleared I take anti-inflamatory medicine for a week or so after to make sure I don't get sore again - sometimes being sore causes stress and that will cause another blockage.

Sending you huge rumbly purrs Kimo for a speedy recovery and some love to your beans too.

Oh noes! I have had surgery to have bladder stones removed. Mine were oxalate stones. I ate a special prescription diet for a while, but my current vet does not like the Hills C/D foods. He says the most important thing is to get lots of fluid: eat nutritious canned food, and drink lots. I am purring for Kimo to get all better soon!

We just heard about Kimo. We're purring really loud for him. One of the cats who came before, Kashmir, had problems like that and had a couple of stones removed. She ate special food too and never had another problem.

Kimo, we are sending our strongest healing purrs to you, furriend! Our tuxie brother Max at the Bridge had this problem too, but his was so bad that he had to have the surgery. He had to eat the C/D food for the rest of his life, and was fine. We hope that things can be fixed for you without the surgery, and are purraying very hard for you too ...
