Purrayers needed!

(updates at bottom of post)

Hello kittehs and friends, Mommakitty here to give you an update. For those of you who don't already know, Kimo has been missing since Tuesday 11/14/11 around 2:00pm. He is an indoor only cat and has managed to slip outside - Daddykitty has been doing a lot of home and yard projects and he and the handyman go in and out all day. This is probably when Kimo planned his escape - waiting for the right moment to slip out went a door or window was left open a little by mistake.

We are very worried because of the cold weather we're having lately - low 30's at night. Plus, our cats do not go outside and so there is none of their mancat scent around the property for Kimo to get a wiff of home. He would also be a little skittish if strangers were to approach.

We're hoping he is hunkering down somewhere and keeping safe from other critters. We have lots of raccoons (larger than the cats) in the neighborhood, and other scary large animals - and CARS. We have checked the entire house inside - all cupboards, closets, crawl spaces, box springs, etc. Kimo would not waste a minute to come running if I were to shake a bag of treats. I knew for sure he was not in the house when I put our toddler to bed and he did not join us for story time - Kimo ALWAYS comes in Kiera's room to sit on the bed during story time and stays on her bed until she falls asleep. Luckily, at her age, she is easily distracted and in not aware of his absence . . . yet.

My husband and I have walked the neighborhood, (night & day), gone door to door, posted flyers, notified vets and and the animal shelter, and have put out some food. At the advice of a cat blogger, we scattered contents of the vacuum (full of cat hair) up the driveway and around the property hoping he will catch his scent and find his way home.

Your support and ongoing prayers are welcome and appreciated. I will post updates when I can. On Wednesday 11/16 I am taking the day off work to walk around when it's daylight and little warmer - plus I will continue to walk in the still of the night when I'd more likely hear his voice or see his laser eyes beam back to my flashlight. I will also keep updates on my FaceBook page (more often). Thanks again for all the support!
Love, Mommakitty (aka Susie)

11/16/11 Update 4:33 pm - More walking around today, talking to neighbors, postman and city workers in area. I went to the shelter and they had a cat that looked a lot like Kimo in the face, and I sooo wanted it to be him - he had been trapped near our house on 11/10. This cat was not chipped and he had markings on his back that weren't Kimo. Also called the microchip company to register Kimo as being lost. Looks like something has nibbled on the food left outside.
- Mommakitty

Update 11/17/11, 1:20 pm - still no Kimo. Walked the neighborhood several times yesterday and last night. Received a couple of calls from neighbors about possible cats sounds (meowing/fighting), but when I went to check it out, nothing about Kimo. This morning there was evidence of more nibbling from one food dish, so I reduced 3 dishes to the one area hoping the nibbler will come only to that one spot (also put a his cat bed out in a box shelter).
- Mommakitty

Update 11/18/11, 11:11 pm - No real news today. FYI - the "handyman" carpenter is here M-F, and sometimes weekends - he's a neighborhood friend and always checks his vehicle. Tonight we're setting a cat trap. Fingers and paws crossed.
- Mommakitty

Update 11/19/11, 7:28 am - Nothing in the trap, but something did come close. I put about a pea size of food in a couple of places outside the trap that has been eaten. The little rug near the entry of the trap is dirty, but whatever it was didn't venture in.

Don't forget to put some food and water outside for him, and maybe a towel or blanket and a few of his toys.
I'm not certain about all these things... I think this is what you are supposed to do.
Hopefully others can correct this or add to it... but I know you are supposed to put things with their scent on it outside.
I have read that most cats hang around their house after making the Big Escape.
We are all sending love and purrs and purrayers for Kimo to find his way back home FAST!

(Alasandra)Do you have a harness so you can take Sabi outside to help look for Kimo? Don't know if Sabi will do it but Scylla calls the other cats and I have a feeling they hear her MEOWING much further then they hear my calling them.

We has our paws crossed he is found soon and that he is safe. Comforting purrs for all of you and we are sending purrs on how to get home to Kimo.

Oh NO!! We're sending our best purrs for Kimo to come home.

One other tip we've heard about is putting out a dirty piece of clothing with scent on it plus sprinkling some cat box contents around. Yes it will stink, but you want him to pick up the scent.

Often indoor cats will be real close by if they slip outside - do you have any steps, crawlspaces etc he can get into - or do the neighbors? They are usually very close to the house but scared to come out. Sending purrs - look in the closest places!

We are purring very hard that you will find Kimo. Our neighbor's indoor cat got out one time and got locked in another neighbor's garage for a couple of days. Maybe he's hiding out someplace like that.

Kimo, come home NOW!!!

Good luck in finding Kimo. Don't forget to ask the neighbours to watch out for him and perhaps ask people who are around the neighbourhood all the time, like the postman and newspaper boys. I hope to read good news soon.

Oh no! We are sending thoughts and purrs for Kimo to come home soon!

If he has a chip, they can send out electronic bulletins for people in the area to be on the lookout (I signed up to get alerts for SF). And like others said, indoor cats tend not to go too far away, so hopefully he is just hiding somewhere that feels safe nearby.

Sending homing purrrrrrrrs to Kimo. Come on kittie, get your tail back in the house.

Have you checked around the house itself? If there is construction going on, there are likely a lot of hidey holes that aren't there normally. If you (or a neighbor) has any sheds or garages, check there. Kimo could have gotten himself locked away.

Good luck. We know how it is to have a kittie just disappear.

Cat Street Boyz said...

Poor Kimo....kitties that get our in surroundings they are not used to, hear sounds that are uncommon to them, usually keep in hiding. They become confused and disoriented. Make sure you contact local rescue groups, they can help with helpful advice as I am in a Bengal rescue and know how they have helped owners get their cats back.
You may be advised to set a trap with food, water and a blanket or cat bed he has been using.
After one of our cats got out in our previous home, one of our neighbors advised us to put up deep sounding chimes so if he got out again he could hear his way home form a distance. Since we moved, only Toy got out so we rang the chimes and finally there he was at the fence, looking to get back in the yard.
We send all our purrz and prayers for Kimo's safe return=^Y^=

Ever since we read about Kimo on FB, we have been hoping he would be found or find his way home soon.

I remember looking for an indoor cat that got out years ago. Searched for 2 days. Finally took my dog around the apt complex and she found the cat hiding inside the next door neighbor's small fenced patio. She was too scared to even meow when I called.

Hope Kimo will soon be home.

Gosh, we have had cats disappear and it is such a horrible feeling. We sure feel for you. Just keep calling him. Maybe sit outside if you can stand the cold and see if there is any activity anywhere. On a positive note, we had a cat disappear for 3 months and then showed up at home.
Do you have any outside buildings that he could have gotten shut in by mistake or do any of your neighbors have any outside buildings that he might be hiding in. Can he get under your house?/ Just a couple of ideas. Good luck and sending purrs for sure that he come home.

Don't forget to call rescue organizations in your area and the humane society. Animals get turned in all the time & people don't call regularly. Google "find lost cat", all kinds of info comes up. Have a rescue company blanket your area with alert phone calls. We get these calls a couple times a year. They give the cats name, description, important info and a phone number. Try this web site: http://www.petrescue.com/petlibrary/pet-rescue/how-to-find-a-lost-cat-or-dog/
Good luck! We are so sorry you are going through this and are purring for you and Kimo.
